Course Title cdmaOne/IS95: Network Architecture, Operation, and Design
Aimed At

Those experienced with a wireless technology and understanding of the direct sequence spread spectrum techniques who wish to study cdmaOne , or IS95.  The standard presentation of this course assumes a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related subject along with an appropriate background in communications.

Prerequisites
  • Knowledge of the wireless network structure and operation, RF propagation and fading issues, and link budget analysis.
  • At least two years experience in the design and optimization of a wireless network using any major technology.
Course in a Nutshell

Whether you know it as the ‘Qualcomm CDMA’, IS95, or cdmaOne,  it’s a technology that is not only important in its own right, but it also paved the way for a whole family of CDMA-based technologies of the future.  As an early CDMA system, cdmaOne is a relatively simple technology; however, it captures all the uniqueness of a CDMA-based system, providing an excellent launch pad for a discussion of all CDMA-based systems.

You will learn how the direct sequence spread spectrum concepts have been implemented in a real system.  You will see how even relatively simple ideas can become hard to implement when they all must work together.  These ‘system level’ questions and associated answers will drive our discussion of how to design and optimize better CDMA networks.  The insights gained from our discussion of the technology’s strengths and limitations will help you grasp the issues central to the design and operation of CDMA networks generally, and thus motivate the study of the CDMA-based technologies of the third generation and beyond.
