Report in a Nutshell

WiFi technology is advancing beyond the usage model of providing indoor, short-range wireless Internet access for mobile computers. The extended range of WiFi access points for indoor and outdoor applications has the capability of coverage across entire campuses, thus eliminating wiring infrastructures for other types of electronic equipment. Applications and demand for new services will drive WiFi to bring voice, data and video into the space of various offerings. WiFi is evolving from a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) application to a broadband wireless service with a great deal of opportunities on a global scale.

How will WiFi hold up against WiMAX? Which vendors are aggressively pursuing WiFi? What is going to happen to municipal wireless? This report evaluates the current state of the WiFi value chain, vendors, service providers, and solutions as well as the future prospects of WiFi.

Key Questions Answered

Readers will discover that at the end of the day, the revenue models ultimately dictate which technology is deployed. The revenue models used to support the original municipal WiFi installations did not fail because of the technology.
